What You Need to Know About Tampa Dialysis Lawsuits

On Behalf of | Aug 5, 2013 | Tampa Dialysis Lawsuits

After undergoing dialysis treatments that appeared routine on the surface, hundreds of patients across the United States indicated that they had suffered a heart attack or some other type of cardiac incident.  Death due to sudden cardiac arrest, cases of heart attack immediately following dialysis treatment, incidents of strokes and additional side effects has prompted the filing of GranuFlo lawsuits.  These claims allege that the dialysis drug manufactured by Fresenius Medical Care (FMC) has the potential to cause the above GranuFlo side effects within 48 hours after it has been administered.

GranuFlo and NaturaLyte are both acid concentrates used to neutralize the acid that builds in the blood during the dialysis treatment.

Tampa dialysis lawsuits that have been filed claim that Fresenius Medical Care failed to warn dialysis patients of the risks associated with GranuFlo and NaturaLyte, which include but are not limited to:

  • Stroke.
  • Heart attack.
  • Damage to the heart muscle.
  • Sudden death due to cardiac arrest.
  •  Catastrophic injury to the cardiopulmonary system.

Following the growing number of patients filing dialysis lawsuits naming these side effects, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) took action in June 2012 by announcing a Class I GranuFlo recall.  Class I recalls are the most serious type of recall, and are only issued when the agency determines there is a high likelihood that a product can cause serious side effects or death.

Important facts to understand about GranuFlo and NaturaLyte:

  • Most incidents of cardiac arrest occurred within 48 hours of receiving GranuFlo dialysis treatment.
  • GranuFlo was used in more than 1,800 Fresenius clinics across the country. The facilities may have different names, so contact us to find out if your clinic is affiliated with Fresenius.
  • Granuflo was also sold to clinics not owned by Fresenius.
