Tips for dealing with lower back pain

lower-back-painMany people will develop lower back pain at some point in life. There are numerous causes for lower back pain such as crouching all the time, stretching or exercising incorrectly and lifting heavy objects. Severe lower back pain can also be caused by work related injuries and automobile accidents.  You will want to call both a doctor and an attorney if you have lower back pain caused by another person in an accident or workplace.

  • Consider starting physical therapy. Physical therapy will help build up strength.
  • Stay reasonably active. Consult with a doctor to see what you should and should not do.  Remaining stagnant and sitting on the couch all day or hanging out in bed, will often make lower back pain worse over time.
  • Take painkillers if recommended by your doctor. You should take anti-inflammatory drugs like Advil.  Painkillers can reduce swelling in the back and relive pain temporarily.
  • You can also ice your back to reduce swelling.  About 20-30 minutes every 3-4 hours for a couple days should help.
  • Taking hot baths and heating your lower back with an electric heating pad have been known to help relive pain too. You should only apply heat to your lower back after a couple days of icing it first.
  • If you do a lot of lifting, consider wearing a girdle for addition support. Ask your doctor before doing this.
