Testosterone Replacement Therapy and the Increased Risk of Heart Attack

On Behalf of | Apr 6, 2014 | Tampa Attorney

Frank Charles Miranda, P.A. is currently reviewing claims from men who have suffered a heart attack, stroke, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), blood clots, pulmonary embolism or other injuries while taking testosterone supplements. These prescription products include Androderm, Androgel, Axiron, Bio-T-Gel, Striant and Testopel. These products have all been approved by the FDA and are applied through a transdermal patch, buccal swab, gel application or an injection.

Testosterone and the increased risk of heart attack or stroke:

In November 2013 the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published a study in which more than 8,000 male veterans with low testosterone were studied. Researchers compared the risk of cardiovascular illness for those who received testosterone supplements with the men who did not receive the supplements, and found that those who used supplements were 29% more likely to have a heart attack or a stroke after three years. The marked difference could be noticed even after taking into account age, blood pressure, pre-existing heard disease and a variety of other factors. It was clear that men using such testosterone medications were at a higher risk of serious and potentially deadly heart issues.

The role of the FDA and its evaluation of testosterone supplements:

The FDA announced in January 2014 that it would be evaluating the risk of stroke, heart attack and death from testosterone supplement products. In a safety alert, the agency explained that it would reassess the safety of testosterone therapy products. The action was prompted by another follow-up study which showed that some men over age sixty-five tripled their risk of some cardiac events when using testosterone therapy.

Additional side effects and risks associated with testosterone replacement therapy:

Other side effects associated with testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) include an enlarged prostate, breast growth, blood clots, sleep apnea, liver disease, blocked arteries and high cholesterol. These side effects begin to manifest within ninety days of testosterone therapy commencing.

Low testosterone products include but are not limited to:
