To raise awareness regarding cases of cardiac arrest associated with dialysis and the FMC products GranuFlo and NaturaLyte, the office of Frank Charles Miranda, P.A. issued an alert covering the serious effects of the products.
The office of Frank Charles Miranda, P.A. indicated that the notice was drafted for Tampa kidney dialysis patients, as well as surviving family members of kidney dialysis patients who suffered cardiac arrest after receiving dialysis treatment. The alert explained that there are roughly 400,000 cases of renal (kidney) failure in the United States, meaning that these patients are unable to filter wastes from their own blood. Patients suffering kidney failure are forced to undergo dialysis regularly, using a machine cleanse the blood in place of the failing kidneys. The notice went on to explain that kidney dialysis patients are treated using concentrates that help filter and remove wastes from blood. More than thirty percent of all kidney dialysis patients were treated using NaturaLyte or GranuFlo, until both were recalled by the Food and Drug Administration.
The office of Frank Charles Miranda, P.A. explained that the notice to kidney dialysis patients was a must, because kidney dialysis patients who received dialysis treatments using either GranuFlo or NaturaLyte were five times more at risk to suffer cardiac arrest. The alert went on to explain that the FDA issued a Class 1 recall, the most serious type of recall, on both FMC products during the month of June 2012. It was further explained that kidney dialysis patients or, in certain cases, their surviving family members are now pursuing lawsuits against FMC based upon the fact that FMC was aware of nearly 1,000 reports of cardiac arrest in 2012.
The office of Frank Charles Miranda, P.A. closed with explaining that the problems with GranuFlo and NaturaLyte were particularly troublesome, because FMC knew of the potential for cardiac arrest and only issued an internal memo.
Both GranuFlo and NaturaLyte were produced by Fresenius for kidney dialysis centers across the entire United States.
